What is Local SEO?

Local SEO (Local Search Engine Optimization) is a set of techniques and strategies aimed at improving a business's visibility in local search engine results like Google. The goal is for the business to appear before people who are searching for products or services in their area.

Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on national or global markets, Local SEO is aimed at attracting customers from a specific city, neighborhood or region.

Examples when Local SEO is important:

  • A restaurant that wants to appear when searching for "pizzeria Sofia"
  • A plumber who wants to be found when searching "plumber Plovdiv"
  • A dentist who aims to appear in Google Maps for "dentist Varna"

Main Local SEO techniques

A successful Local SEO strategy consists of several key elements. Here are the most important ones:

1. Google Business Profile (GBP) Optimization

This is the most important element of Local SEO. Google Business Profile is the free profile through which a business appears in Google Maps and local results.

How to optimize it:

  • Complete and accurate information: Fill out every section completely and consistently (name, address, phone number (NAP), business hours, website, business categories).
  • Choosing accurate categories: Select the most relevant primary category and additional ones that describe your business.
  • Quality photos: Upload high-quality photos of the interior, exterior, products and team.
  • Respond to reviews: Respond professionally to both positive and negative reviews. This shows engagement.
  • Use features: Regularly publish updates (Posts) about promotions, events and new products. Answer frequently asked questions (Q&A).

2. NAP Consistency (Name, Address, Phone)

Your contact information must be completely identical everywhere on the internet. This includes your website, GBP and all other online directories.

Where to check:

  • Your website (in header/footer)
  • Google Business Profile
  • Social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Local directories (government portals, bg.dir.bg, etc.)
  • Review sites (TripAdvisor, Zoon)

Any inconsistency (e.g., "Main St" on your site vs "Main St #5" in a directory) can harm your ranking.

3. Local Keywords

Researching and using the right keywords is critical.

How to choose them:

  • Geographic modifiers: Add the name of the city or area to your main services (e.g., "dentist sofia", "pizza delivery lozenets", "family lawyer pleven").
  • Intent words: Include words that show purchase intent ("order", "buy", "price", "best").
  • Use Google Autocomplete: Enter your main service in Google and see what suggestions appear.

4. Website optimization for locality

Your website should support your local efforts.

How to do it:

  • Contact page: Clearly indicate your physical location with a Google map.
  • Service pages by areas: Create separate pages for each of your services in different cities/neighborhoods you serve (e.g., "Roof repair Plovdiv", "Roof repair Varna").
  • Local content: Write blog posts or create content related to local events, news or the community.
  • Mobile compatibility: Since many local searches are made from mobile devices, your website should load quickly and look good on phones and tablets.

5. Local links (Local Citations and Backlinks)

Citations: These are mentions of your business name, address and phone number (NAP) on other websites (online directories, local magazines, portals). Even if they're not links, they help Google confirm the legitimacy and location of your business.

Backlinks from local sources: Connect with local blogs, newspapers, magazines or business organizations and try to earn links to your site. Sponsoring a local event is a good way to do this.

6. Reviews and Testimonials

Positive reviews not only influence potential customers' decisions but are also a ranking factor in Google.

How to collect them:

  • Carefully ask satisfied customers to leave a review on Google.
  • Send follow-up emails with a direct link to your GBP profile after completing a deal or service.
  • Make the process easy – one click should take them to the review page.
